Zoom Settings and Audio Recording Tips

Zoom Settings and Audio Recording Tipsfor Project #2

    • Main settings:
      • Menu> SD card Menu> Format > yes
      • Menu> Rec Mode > File type: .wav 48kHz, 24bit
    • Other settings to check:
      • LoCut: Off
      • AGC/COMP: off
      • folder: 01
      • Monitor: off
      • Plug-in: off
      • Pre rec: off
      • Auto rec: off
      • L/R Position: Player
      • Mono Mix: off
    • On the zoom body, set the GAIN to Medium
      • (Most likely). Listen back to all three settings.
    • Record Volume vs. Listening
      • Set headphone listening level separately at beginning
      • Maintain record levels at -20db, peak no further than -12db
      • You are "riding" this gain throughout the interview
    • Record ready + record
      • On the silver recorders, you need to hit "record" once to set your levels, and a second time to actually record.
      • If the timecode isn't counting up, you are not recording.
    • Select mic pattern:
      • FRONT 90 - for interviewer only (the front of the zoom is facing recordist).
      • REAR 120 - for field recordings, or interviewee’s vocals only
      • SURROUND 2CH - front and rear simultaneously, for two people

    • Audio Recording Tips!
      • Ask your interviewee to kindly answer in complete sentences! And remember to ask “open-ended” questions that elicit more than a yes or no response.
      • Wear headphones and listen as your record! That way you can tell if you’re getting interference, if the person is popping their plosives (if so, back the mic off a bit), or if the batteries run out.
      • Hold mic just below the interviewee’s chin, coming out on a diagonal.
      • Make sure to record 1min room tone before you wrap (use the same recording level, the same microphone pattern, same location, same number of people in the room etc. as the interview setup).
      • Turn cellphones off or put on airplane mode while recording. Incoming calls and texts will cause static-y interference.
      • Periodically check the recorder to make sure the numbers are still rolling and that you are actually recording!
